A Walk through Mussoorie

Char Dukan (Four Shops) to Tavern through Mall Road

This is perhaps the best way to show you what walking through town is like. This is a compilation of several clips from this spring walking from the top of the hillside to Tavern (one of our favorite places to grab a bite in town). The entire walk is entirely downhill and covers an elevation change of around 650 feet.

The walk starts at the intersection near Char Dukan, a small strip of four tea stalls that is typically flocked by tourists on the weekends. We love to get comfort food (think ramen, which is called “maggi” here, and a large egg sandwich called a “bun omelette”) and chai at Anil’s, which claims to be the oldest of the four shops.

The walk then takes you down, down, down to Doma’s Inn, a restaurant and inn run by a local family that serves Tibetan and Nepali favorites (their momos are especially good).

We then arrive at Mullingar, an intersection and point of reference for many locals.

Then we pass shop after shop after shop in town following the snaking Mall Road, which can be followed for far longer than I have here. Finally, you pass the intersection that is generally just called “Picture Palace” after the now defunct (I think?) arcade and arrive at Tavern, where friends are waiting for you. This is what we affectionately call “Downstairs Tavern,” but there is also “Upstairs Tavern” in the same building that has a more traditional setting and serves great Indian food. We love hanging out with groups up there as well.
